Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Rocks and Water, manner of Salvator Rosa (Arenella, Naples 1615 – Rome 1673), mid 17th to mid 18th century. Two figures converse, on the left, by rocks on the near bank of a river, with steep rocks on the far side. Another figure on the right is bent over a boat. In the background large barren rocks loom.
Provenance
Acquired by Sir Richard Colt Hoare, 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) either between 1785-87 or 1788-91;given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
