Dalton Castle, Cumbria

A display of 16th and 17th century armour, geological specimens and local artefacts.
The Pele tower of Dalton Castle was originally built in the mid-14th century, perhaps to replace one destroyed after a raid in 1322 by Robert the Bruce, in which much of Furness was devastated. It has since been restored and altered on numerous occasions. In 1546, at the direction of Henry VIII, it was repaired with materials from Furness Abbey. There were substation alterations to the windows and floor levels in the 18th and 19th centuries. The square tower - originally 4 storeys - is 2 storeys and made of stone. It has Gothic windows and the interior features original Gothic stonework.
