Greenway was the holiday home of Agatha Christie, her children and grandchildren. The highlights encompass generations of collecting and interesting objects owned and treasured by the family.
Situated on a promontory above the River Dart, Greenway is most famous as the holiday home of famous crime writer and playwright Agatha Christie. In fact there has been a house on this site for over 400 years. In the 16th century a Tudor mansion called Greenway Court was built for the Gilbert family who were famous Devon seafarers and who received patents to establish colonies in Ireland, Newfoundland and Maine. There is little documentary evidence relating to this Tudor house. In the late 18th century the present Georgian house was built by an unknown architect for Roope Harris Roope, a successful sea merchant. Building materials from the earlier house – local Devonian slate – were re-used in the new building. During the 19th century the house was sold on a number of occasions, and in 1938 it was purchased by Agatha Christie, who featured it in two of her novels: Dead Man’s Folly and Five Little Pigs. Greenway has been accredited by the International Camellia Society as a 'Garden of Excellence.'
