Benthall Hall is a small manor house situated on a plateau above the gorge of the River Severn. This fine stone house with mullioned and transomed windows was built in the late 16th century for the Benthalls, a family whose Catholic sympathies led them to incorporate into the house several secret places for priests. Benthall has been altered extensively over the past 400 years and contains Jacobean and Caroline interiors. It was tenanted between 1860 and 1890 by the botanist George Maw, some of whose collection of plants have naturalised in the garden.
