Coughton Court is a Tudor courtyard house that was altered after being damaged during the Civil War. Its most remarkable feature is the great gatehouse, built in the first half of the 16th century for Sir George Throckmorton, whose family held the estate from 1409. This central, 3-storey stone structure features battlemented octagonal angle-turrets and a double-storey oriel, flanked by Gothic stone wings. The interior features Gothick plasterwork and a fan-vaulted hall. The Throckmortons were a prominent recusant family. In 1605, Thomas Throckmorton lent his house to Sir Everard Digby, and it was here on the 5th of November that Lady Digby and the Jesuit Father Garnet heard that the Gunpowder Plot had failed.
A good collection of 16th - 19th century paintings, mostly family portraits (by Lely, Kneller, Ducros and Largilliere); 17th century tapestries and a small exhibition of Throckmorton family documents. There is also a small group of medieval manuscripts, as well as a seventeenth-century travelling library.
