The Homewood
The Homewood is a modernist house inspired by the work of Le Corbusier and Mies van der Rohe. It was designed by the architect Patrick Gwynne for his family and completed in the early summer of 1938. Situated at the top of a gently sloping hill, the Homewood is an elevated house on pilotis or pillars.
The reinforced concrete structure of the house creates open and spacious interiors that are uncluttered with internal supports. The sitting room has floor to ceiling windows which provide uninterrupted views of the gardens. Despite the predominance of sleek modernist lines and industrial materials, Gwynne’s use of terrazzo, marble and gold leaf endow the house with a luxurious aesthetic. Although the Homewood was Gwynne’s first house project, it was the house he lived in and adapted for the rest of his life.
