Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Lamarsh Hall, Lamarsh, Essex, by John Constable, RA (East Bergholt 1776 – London 1837), c. 1799. The house of Constable's friend the Reverend Brooke Hurlock of Lamarsh, Essex at left, with a river in foreground and an angler in a boat by a footbridge, against an evening sky. On the reverse: the remains of faint sketch by Constable of a church (left) and an extensive plan (right) and the labels 'Exhibited at Tate Gallery, no date', 'Exhibited at Gainsborough House 1991'.
Provenance
Said to have been painted for the Reverend Brooke Hurlock (1729 - 1803); given to his daughter, Lucy on her marriage to Thomas Blackburne in 1800; by descent to Margaret Avelina Blackburne, from whom acquired by Vicars Brothers Ltd, 1934 and thence by descent; bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
