The Assembly Rooms, designed by John Wood the Younger in 1769, are one of Bath’s finest Georgian buildings. Built from Bath limestone, the building has a Doric portico entrance and a slate hipped roof. Wood’s plan for the Assembly Rooms is essentially U-shaped with four main function rooms: the Ball Room (the largest Georgian interior in Bath), the Tea Room, The Card Room and the Octagon Room. The interiors are extravagantly decorated with Corinthian columns, ornate swags, Whitefriars crystal chandeliers and Vitruvian scrolls. These elegant rooms played an important role as a venue for entertainment in polite society of Georgian England.
Bath Assembly Rooms were at the heart of fashionable Georgian society, the perfect venue for entertainment. When completed in 1771, they were described as ‘the most noble and elegant of any in the kingdom’. The original crystal chandeliers still hang from the ceiling.
