Summary
Lid for one of a pair of jars, porcelain, of domed shape with a flat rim, its bud-shaped finial missing, made in Arita, Hizen Province, Japan, c. 1690–1720, decorated in the Imari palette in underglaze blue and overglaze red, yellow black and gold, with peonies, prunus and rocks and with rosettes on the rim.

A similar jar is in the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, inv. no. PO 5817, with a likely provenance from Augustus II (known as ‘the Strong’), Elector of Saxony (1670–1733), and listed in the 1779 inventory of the Dutch Palace at Neustadt.
Provenance
Possibly at Cockayne Hatley, Bedfordshire, and moved to Belton House after 1921; purchased by the National Trust with assistance from the National Heritage memorial Fund, 1984.
