Summary
Pair of jars, porcelain, of baluster shape and with domed lids, made in Arita, Hizen Province, Japan, c. 1690–1720, decorated in the Imari palette in underglaze blue and overglaze red, yellow black and gold, with a band of spirals and another of foliate scrolls around the bases, garden scenery with rocks, peony and prunus around the sides, a band with peony and iris and a band with pavilions, fences, prunus, pine, maple and stylised iris roundels around the shoulders, the necks with prunus flowers and foliage, the lids with peonies, prunus and rocks and with rosettes on the rims, surmounted by blue bud-shaped finials.

A similar jar is in the collection of the Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, inv. no. PO 5817, with a likely provenance from Augustus II (known as ‘the Strong’), Elector of Saxony (1670–1733), and listed in the 1779 inventory of the Dutch Palace at Neustadt.
Provenance
Possibly at Cockayne Hatley, Bedfordshire, and moved to Belton House after 1921; purchased by the National Trust with assistance from the National Heritage memorial Fund, 1984.
