Summary
Dish, porcelain, round with upwardly curving sides, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, 1690–1700, decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in the famille verte (‘green family’) palette with a central rosette surrounded by six tear-shaped palmettes, a band of scrolling foliate and floral ornament around the cavetto, and with a grapevine pattern around the rim.
Full description
The decoration on these dishes is associated with the Islamic market. The tear-shaped palmettes are related to the originally Persian boteh or buta motif (pine-cone-shaped with a sharply curved upper end). This dish shares its shape and some (but not all) of its decoration with dish NT 433370.2.
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust with support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, 1984.
