Summary
Two dishes, porcelain, round with upwardly curving sides, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, China, 1690–1700, decorated in underglaze blue and overglaze enamels in the famille verte ('green family') palette with tear-shaped palmettes, various rosettes and meandering foliage and other flowers.
Full description
The decoration on these dishes is associated with the Islamic market. The tear-shaped palmettes are related to the originally Persian boteh or buta motif (pine-cone-shaped with a sharply curved upper end).
Provenance
Purchased by the National Trust with support from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, 1984.
