Box shaped like a folded letter, Germany, c.1760. Enamel with gold mount, painted with writing, the inside painted with trumpeters on horseback by a palace in a landscape, Germany. Inscription: ‘Á Monsineur Monsieur Tamdidldum illustre fifre auligue et meitre de trompe montres honorable mignon Son Logis â une brebis gelense gate lout le troupau á Prague’ (‘To Monsieur, Monsieur Tamdidldum, illustrious flautist and horn player, honourable and lovely, your place has a black sheep which harasses all the flock in Prague’)
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943.
