This is a copy of the painting now in the National Gallery. Cupid, the Son of Venus, is shown in a forest clearing with his mother, and his teacher, Mercury, here shown without his winged helmet. The education of gods and goddesses was a popular theme during the Renaissance, reflecting the revived interest in classical learning.
