Caption
St Anthony was regarded as the model of monastic life and the rejection of vice, especially pleasures of the flesh. He is here surrounded by personifications of temptation, who appear as demons, but he continues to read without distraction. The pig-like demon represents gluttony and lust; the pitcher personifies temperance; and the skull and the hourglass symbolise vanity and the passing of life.
