Caption
Barbara Ivory was the daughter of Sir John Ivory (1655 – 95) and Anne Talbot (1665 – 1720), and sister of John Ivory Talbot (?1691 – 1772), who inherited Lacock. She married Henry Davenport of Worfield, Shropshire (1677 – 1731), as his second wife. Their son, the Rev. William Davenport (1725 – 1781) married his cousin, Martha Talbot (c.1722 – 1790), who had inherited Lacock from her brother. There is another, reduced, version of this picture, also at Lacock.
Summary
Oil painting on canvas, of Barbara Ivory, Mrs Henry III Davenport (d.1748), British (English) School, circa 1715/20. A three-quarter-length portrait, seated, with her body facing the viewer but her head turned slightly to the left. She is shown wearing a pale mauve-brown dress, her hands on her lap with an open book.
Full description
Daughter of Sir John Talbot (1630 – 1714) and his second wife, Barbara Slingbsy., and wife of Sir John Ivory (1655 – 1695). Their son, John Ivory Talbot inherited the house and estate directly from his grandfather, Sir John Talbot, and their daughter, Barbara, married Henry Davenport (1677 – 1731). It seems unlikely that, although framed like P/81 (Sir John Ivory), they are not pendants: she looks older and looks later (influenced by Dahl).
Provenance
given by Matilda Theresa Talbot (formerly Gilchrist-Clarke) (1871 – 1958), who gave Lacock Abbey, its essential contents, and the village and estate of Lacock to the National Trust in 1944, and the pictures in 1948.
