Caption
On the death of her parents, the Countess of Scarborough’s guardian was Sir John Talbot of Lacock (d.1714), which would account for the presence of this portrait at Lacock. Her parents were Sir Henry Jones of Aston and Frances Belasyse. She married Richard, 1st Baron Lumley (created Viscount Lumley in 1689, and Earl of Scarbrough in 1690) on 17 March 1684/5. She later became Lady of the Bedchamber to Queens Mary and Anne. It is in this sort of Court milieu in which Wissing might have painted the original of this portrait. An inscription on the painting identifies the sitter as Adelaida, Duchess of Shrewsbury (d.1726), but she bears no resemblance to her.
