Caption
John Mytton was the husband of Mary Elizabeth Davenport, daughter of Henry Davenport (1677 – 1731). Enoch Seeman was a ‘second tier’ portraitist, who was trained by his father in Dantzig and brought to London at a young age.

Oil painting on canvas, John Mytton of Halston, by Enoch Seeman the younger (Gdańsk c.1694 – London 1744), circa 1738. A painted oval half-length portrait of John Mytton of Halston, Shropshire who eloped with Mary Elizabeth Davenport in 1730 and grandfather of 'Mad Jack' Mytton; painted to left in blue coat and waistcoat, white stock and powdered wig. Inscribed on reverse 'Rev William Davenport given him 17..' and sketch portrait.
Provenance
Given by Matilda Theresa Talbot (formerly Gilchrist-Clark) (1871 – 1958), who gave the Abbey, the village of Lacock and the rest of the estate to the National Trust in 1944, along with 96 of the family portraits and other pictures, in 1948
