Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Ideal Classical Landscape, British (English) School, late 18th century, possibly by John Taylor (London 1739 – Cirencester 1838) or George Smith of Chichester (Chichester 1714 - Chichester 1776), in the manner of Richard Wilson RA (Penegoes 1714 – Mold 1782). A view with a temple on a height on the right, and a castle below on the left. The view is similar to Phaeton's Petition to Apollo commissioned by the Duke of Bridgewater in 1763 and engraved by William Wollett of which there is an impression in the British Museum and a version now in the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, one of a series of four piuctures also commissioned in 1763 by Henry Blundell of Ince Blundell Hall, near Liverpool but without the mythological figures. There is also a similar later view, again with figures, and also engraved by Woollett, called Apollo and the Seasons of 1779 in the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge.
