This picture and its companion (also at Dunham Massey) are the two survivors of a set of three ‘Views of the Peak’ by Harris, recorded in 1769. It based on A. Bennet’s engraving of an oblong painting by Thomas Smith of Derby (whereabouts unknown), entitled A Prospect in Dovedale, 3 miles north of Ashbourne, published in 1743
