Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Young Girl holding a Chaffinch, Flemish (Antwerp) School, c.1615-22. A full-length portrait of a young girl, standing, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, her right arm extended with a finch sitting on her right index-finger, her left hand on her hip, pale brown hair dressed with flowers, a white lace ruff, and wearing a long white dress edged with blue; blue striped bodice, a double stand of blue beads is worn across her bodice from her right shoulder and she had a gold cross appearing just below her ruff; landscape view to the left, composed of a river, trees and a distant horizon with a cloudy sky. Formerly attributed to Cornelis de Vos (c.1584–1651) and certainly by an artist working in Antwerp because it has a mark for the painters’ Guild of St Luke in Antwerp on the back of the panel. The work is on long term loan from Cliveden to Upton House for conservation reasons.
