Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Stourhead in its Infancy', British School, mid-18th century. Cattle, sheep and figures are seen in the foreground before a winding path and in front of the lake. Two tall oak trees frame the picture on the right and a white classical temple is seen on the far shore and part of a bridge is visible towards the left. Seen from high ground, it may be a view of Stourhead garden from the area of the original entrance.

Given by Charles Hoare of Luscombe to Francis Fortescue on whose death in 1898, bought by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt by whom given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of the contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946
