Caption
This painting depicts the Old Testament story of the seduction of Lot by his daughters. Subsequent to the destruction of the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah, the women are shown plying their father with wine, believing themselves to be the last of mankind and compelled to procreate. The picture is a copy by Samuel Woodforde of an original by Louis-Jean-François Lagrenée which once also formed part of the Hoare family collection. In the early nineteenth-century the Woodforde copy was displayed as a pendant to Lagrenée's painting of Susannah and the Elders, which still hangs at Stourhead.
