Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Adoration of the Magi, after Paolo Veronese (Verona 1528 -Venice 1588) 1580/82 - 1789. This picture, shaped with semi-circles on centre of each side, is a copy of the central portion of the ceiling, circa 1580-82, which was formerly in the popularly known Church of San Nicolò della Lattuga or known as the Church of San Nicolò dei Frari, which was stripped in 1806, and is now in the Cappella del Rosario, SS Giovanni e Paolo, Venice. A forty-five degree view with the Holy Family on the steps of a portico at the left and the kings and their retinue at the right. Cherubs and angels hover above.
Provenance
Acquired by Richard Colt Hoare 2nd Bt (1758 – 1838) from Colin Morrison in Rome in 1789, who thought it to be a modello for the original, and thence by descent.Given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
