Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Woodcutters by Thomas Gainsborough RA (Sudbury 1727 - London 1788), 1787. An evening landscape with a dead tree at the right. A woodman is bending down to gather a bundle of sticks, which he is about to load onto a donkey, held by his companion. A dog is lying beside the donkey.
Provenance
Gainsborough sale at Schomberg House from 30 March 1789; bought by Maria Palmer Acland, Lady Hoare (d.1845), widow of Sir Richard Hoare, 1st Bt; subsequently the property of Henry Hugh Hoare, later 3rd Bt (1762-1841), Wavendon; brought from Wavendon by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare 6th Bt (1865 - 1947) and Alda Weston, Lady Hoare (d. 1947) to Stourhead between 1894 and 1898; given to the National Trust along with the house, its grounds, and the rest of contents by Sir Henry Hugh Arthur Hoare, 6th Bt (1865 – 1947) in 1946.
