Summary
A large wooden box with a hinged lid for a chemistry set. The bottom part of the box has wooden racks for twelve test tubes on the left and the right sides. The box raises upwards towards the back and has three tiers below the lid to place chemical bottles. The box shows evidence of possible woodworm damage. The box fastens at the front with a metal clasp attached to the box with six screws, in a triangle shape with three at the top and three at the bottom. When opened, the inside of the lid is attached to the box by a strip of metal on the left-hand side as well as the hinges. Inside the lid is a printed colour paper illustration. The illustration depicts a living room scene with a father sitting at a table with the chemistry set in front of him. His son is watching, standing at the side of the table. Around this illustration, at the sides, printed in black ink in red rectangular boxes, it reads 'Interesting' and 'Instructive'. The manufacturer's name and address, 'Stathams Laboratories' is given at a box at the bottom of this illustration. In squares at the side of this bottom notice are illustrations of chemicals in jars. A further label giving a 'Special Notice' is pasted onto the illustration of the table.
