Summary
A child's Merit chemistry set in its original box, together with a coloured postcard of Durham Cathedral written by the donor having found and sent the instruction booklet. The white cardboard box lid has six hexagonal shapes with pictures of scientists at work in two of them, and with pictures of some of the contents in the others. This is repeated on all four sides of the lid. There is an eighteen page instruction book with a coloured photograph, back and front of a boy using the equipment. Inside the box is a plastic and cardboard tray divided into shaped compartments to take the equipment. There are fifteen plastic test tubes, three are empty, the others contain - sodium carbonate, cobalt chloride, manganese sulphate, magnesium sulphate, slaked lime, calcium hydroxide, tartaric acid, alum acysstics, alum powder, copper sulphate, meg crystals and logwood chips. Also in the box are - two corks, two metal dishes, a red pack of litmus paper, a green pack of fine iron wire, a plastic saucer, rubber band, plastic bulbous test tube, metal grippers, two wooden spatulas, a piece of red rubber tubing, a wire and bristle bottle brush, a white plastic scoop, a plastic funnel, three narrow plastic tubes, a folding magnifying glass (plastic) with red cover, a red plastic stand for holding four test tubes and a small squat glass bottle with a gold coloured metal screw lid with a wick through it, and a small strip of litmus paper. Total number of items is 43.
