Summary
A boy's jacket, part of a three piece 'sailor' style half-mourning suit (circa 1871) which consists of a cream linen jacket, trousers and waistcoat. The cream linen jacket with long sleeves and is is short to the waist and double breasted, with six mother of pearl buttons. The jacket also fastens at the waistband with a band of fabric which overlaps on each side and fastens with three metal hooks-type fastenings. the jacket is trimed with two rows of dark green coloured braiding on the neck and down either side of the opening. The waistband is also decorated with green trim. The sleeves have a wide braid, which forms a v-shape, above is another thinner braid which twists to form three loops at the point. The coat has a pocket on the left hand side and is trimmed in a similar way, with loops at either end of the pockets.
Provenance
This suit is part of a set of mourning clothes belonging to a boy called Travers Buxton (born 10.12.1864) who wore them on the death of his mother in 1871.
