Summary
A boy's three piece 'sailor' style half-mourning suit (circa 1871), consists of a cream linen jacket, trousers and waistcoat. A child's cream linen jacket with long sleeves. The jacket is short to the waist and double breasted, with six mother of pearl buttons. The jacket also fastens at the waistband with a band of fabric which overlaps on each side and fastens with three metal hooks-type fastenings. the jacket is trimed with two rows of dark green coloured braiding on the neck and down either side of the opening. The waistband is also decorated with green trim. The sleeves have a wide braid, which forms a v-shape, above is another thinner braid which twists to form three loops at the point. The coat has a pocket on the left hand side and is trimmed in a similar way, with loops at either end of the pockets. A child's cream, linen, waistcoat. The waistcoat is trimmed with three rows of dark green braiding and fastens with five mother of pearl buttons. The sleeve openings have a white edging. The waistcoat has two metal buttons on either side. The buttons have the inscription 'Swears and Wells/ London'. A child's cream, linen, pair of trousers, the trousers open at the front and fasten with four round metal, gold coloured buttons. The have four button holes at the waistband. The waistband is finished with white edging. the trousers have a pocket on the right hand side. Each leg has five mother of pearl buttons down either side, with a metal one at the top. Either side of the buttons are two rows of green braiding. Total number of items is 3.
Provenance
This suit is part of a set of mourning clothes belonging to a boy called Travers Buxton (born 10.12.1864) who wore them on the death of his mother in 1871.
