Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Bird's Eye View of Sudbury Hall: South Front/A View of Sudbury Hall and its Original Formal Gardens by Jan Griffier the elder (Amsterdam c.1645 – London 1718), signed: JOHN. GRIFFIER. FECIT, circa 1680-90. A bird's-eye-view of Sudbury Hall, from the South with formal gardens, church at left in walled enclosure, canal and ornamental ponds in foreground; stable and barns to the right which were built in 1664. George Vernon's new house and garden were almost complete when this view was painted around 1690. It shows the original wooden balustrade that crowned the roof of the house.
Provenance
Acquired from 10th Lord Vernon in lieu of death-duties after the death of Francis Lawrence William Venables-Vernon, 9th Lord Vernon (1889 -1963) and transferred to the National Trust in 1967 through the National Land Fund
