Caption
This idyllic view is on the short stretch of river between two connected lakes which forms the second-biggest lake in Northern Ireland. It is one of a trio of Irish landscapes by an unknown, but probably itinerant artist, commissioned by the Enniskillen family in the 18th century. A fourth in the series is owned by the Earl of Erne at nearby Crom Castle. What captures the eye are the nostalgic muted tones, an unusual technique for oil paintings, inspired by watercolours or coloured prints.
