Summary
Oil painting on canvas, The Augur, after Salvator Rosa (Arenella, Naples 1615 – Rome 1673), 17th century. The Augur stands on a rock at the right, watched by five figures; he points up with his right hand towards a blasted tree at the left. A copy after a lost painting which was engraved by Goupy when in possession of Viscount Coke in 1747.
Provenance
With the classical scholar Robert William Raper (1842 – 1915), life fellow & vice-president of Trinity College, Oxford: “his numerous objects of art and virtù, collected as an amusement without much discrimination, were sold in Oxford and London in 1915 and 1916” (DNB)[previously erroneously stated as 1918]; sale of paintings, Christie’s, 17th December 1915, lot XX; bought by the 8th Lord Berwick at the sale of R.W.Raper, Bursar of Trinity College, Oxon.; bequeathed to the National Trust with the estate, house and contents of Attingham by Thomas Henry Noel-Hill, 8th Baron Berwick (1877-1947) on 15th May 1953.
