Oil painting on canvas, British Attack on the Citadel of Martinique, January, 1762 by Dominic Serres the elder, RA (Auch 1722 – London 1793), 1762/67. A view of Martinique and the Citadel on promontory in bay being attacked by British troops from mainland, in the left foreground a group of officers, presumably Major-General Robert Monckton (1726–1782), the commander and his staf and artillery firing beyond. 'Painted for General Monckton'.
Provenance
Bequeathed to the National Trust by Huttleston Rogers Broughton, 1st Lord Fairhaven (1896-1966) with the house and the rest of the contents.
