Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Frances Legh of Bruche, Mrs Peter Legh (1670 - 1728) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723). A three-quarter-length portrait, seated, facing, with left knee turned in; golden mantle with dark-green revers, over white shift held by pearls on left sleeve; left hand and arm across her waist, right hand on mantle on rock at left, landscape and sky at right. The pendant of this picture is the portrait of her husband, Peter XII Legh (1669 - 1744) also by Kneller.

Provenance

Accepted by HM Government in Lieu of Inheritance Tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2011. 1879 inventory, p.33: Dining Room, 'Mrs Legh ... by ditto [Kneller]'; 1929 inventory, p.15: Dining Room, 'A 3/4 length portrait of Frances Legh of Bruche wife of Peter Legh 1702 wearing yellow wrap and silk chemisette (by Sir Godfrey Kneller, canvas measuring 39 ins. by 48 ins. Signed G.K.).'; by inheritance and descent to Richard, 5th Baron Newton (b.1950), and his brother, the Hon. David Legh (b.1951); accepted by HM Government in lieu of inheritance tax and allocated to the National Trust, 2011.
