Summary
Oil painting on canvas, View of a Lekkerkerk by Abraham van Calraet (Dordrecht 1642 – Dordrecht 1722). On the far bank is a town and the church, whilst across left and centre foreground is a canal bank with, at left, a man holding a fish and a boy in a scarlet coat with a stick over his shoulder; nearer centre there are two men, a woman and two boys in a group and two fishermen with ropes. At centre, two men can be seen in a punt with at right, a sailing barge with many passengers and other boats beyond. Inscribed with Aelbert Cuyp on the frame.
Provenance
Acquired by the 2nd Earl of Egremont in Ap.23 [1761 implied: sale not listed by Lugt] Drapers for £23.13.6. thence by descent, until the death in 1952 of the 3rd Lord Leconfield, who had given Petworth to the National Trust in 1947, and whose nephew and heir, John Wyndham, 6th Lord Leconfield and 1st Lord Egremont (1920-72) arranged for the acceptance of the major portion of the collections at Petworth in lieu of death duties (the first ever such arrangement) in 1956 by H.M.Treasury.
