Caption
The Jesuit church of St Charles Borromeo in Antwerp was built between 1615 and 1621 to designs by the architect Peter Huyssens (1577–1637) and Jesuit rector Franciscus Aguilonius. It was an important Baroque building, but the interior, together with its paintings by Sir Peter Paul Rubens (1577–1640), was destroyed by fire in 1718. This painting is attributed to Anton Günther Gheringh, who painted views of the interior of the Jesuit church in the 1660s. Like the two paintings by Hendrick van Minderhout at Dyrham Park, and the paintings of A Boar Hunt and A Bear Hunt, this painting was bought by William I Blathwayt in 1693 from the Flemish artist Jan Siberechts (1627–1703), who seems to have been acting as his agent.
