Caption

Mary Wynter was the heiress to the Dyrham Park estate, and she brought the property with her when she married William I Blathwayt (?1649–1717) in 1686, at the then comparatively late age of 36. She had been introduced to William through the diplomat and statesman Sir Robert Southwell (1635–1702), whose son Edward (1671–1730) was later married to the Blathwayt’s daughter Anne. Mary bore William I Blathwayt four children before her death five years after their marriage. Three of their children survived infancy: William (1688–1742) who inherited Dyrham Park on the death of his father; John (1690–1754), who went on to become a colonel; and Anne (1691–1717).

Summary

Oil painting on canvas, a portrait of Mary Wynter, Mrs William I Blathwayt (1650-1691), attributed to Michael Dahl, inscribed with the name of the sitter and biographical details, circa 1689-91. A three-quarter-length portrait of a middle-aged woman, seated, wearing an amber dress with a blue cloak around her shoulders, a curtain in the background to the left and a terracotta urn behind her to the right. Her left hand is raised above her shoulder, holding a chiffon veil.
