Summary
Oil painting on canvas, 'Le coup de soleil' (Fantasy View of Alkmaar) by Jacob van Ruisdael (1628-1682). A view towards the Dutch town of Alkmaar, with the Grote Kerk standing out on the horizon; nearer the foreground the castle of Egmond, left, and a windmill, right, and cottages among trees; beyond lies the flat landscape, momentarily lit by the sun breaking through rain clouds. Inscribed - J. v. Ruisdael (signed, JvR in monogram).

Count de Mornay sale, Phillips, 20 June 1848, lot 39; Holford Collection by 1851; Sir George Holford sale, Christie's, 17 May 1928, lot 40: bought by Knoedler on behalf of Lord Bearsted, for £6,300 + 10% = £6,930; given with Upton House to the National Trust by Walter Samuel, 2nd Viscount Bearsted (1882 – 1948) shortly before his death in 1948
