The original of this picture is now in the Pinacoteca Nazionale in Bologna. This version was bought in Bologna by Sir Abraham Hume, who had acquired many of the outstanding Old Masters that used to hang at Belton, in 1786. The 1824 ‘Catalogue’ of his collection mistakenly described this as “the original study for an altar-piece in the church of St. Gregory at Bologna.”
