Summary
Marble, A Philosopher after or circle of Orazio Marinali (Bassano 1643 - Vicenza 1720). A bust of a classical man, head turned to proper right and looking up, lips parted as if laughing. With curled hair, sideburns and moustache, and drapery over the proper right shoulder and around the left arm, held in place by a strap across the proper left shoulder. A copy or studio version of a 'Philosopher' by Orazio Marinali (1643-1720); see also variant in the V&A known as 'Democritus', attributed to the Italian (Venetian) School, early 18th century.
