Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Figures on a Road by a Wood by Jan Wynants (Haarlem c.1635 - Amsterdam 1684), signed and dated, bottom left: J. Wynants A 1668. A winding road on the lft skirts a wood; on it are a peasnt woman and child, two sportsmen resting by the side of the road and ther members of a hunting party in the middle-distance; in the foreground is a large half dead oak tree and a fallen tree beside it. The figures have in the past been attributed to Johnnes Lingelbach.

Oosterdyk and H. van der Heuvel sale, Amsterdam 8th October 1800, lot 94; bought by Kooi; A. van der Werff van Zindland sale, Amsterdam, 31st July 1811, lot 127; Charles Heusch by 1835; whose collection Baron Lionel de Rothschild bought en bloc; Anthony de Rothschild (1887- 1961), by whom kept at Ascott, and given with the house and grounds to the National Trust in 1949
