Summary
Oil painting on panel, A Winter Landscape by Philips Wouverman (Haarlem 1619 - Haarlem 1668), signed, bottom right: Philips (in monogram) W. RH inscribed on the back of the panel. On a narrow frozen canal by old cottages are sledges and skaters; on the tright are a man and a woman on horseback, preceded by an old peasant, carruying a load on his back, on a raod under snow beyond. A rare winter landscape by Wouwermans showing the lively actvity of the skaters with the barreness of frozen landscape.

Jacob de Vos sale, 2 July 1833, lot 44; bought Broudgeest; Hendrick Six van Hillegon sale, Amsterdam, 25 November 1851, lot 54; Baron Lionel de Rothschild; thence by descent until ? accepted in lieu of tax on the estate of Yvonne de Rothschild by HM Treasury and transferred to the National Trust in 2000
