Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Two Figures by a Ruin, after Richard Wilson RA (Penegoes 1714 – Mold 1782), 1770s. Sun breaking through storm clouds with a ruined building to the right foreground and two figures in the centre. Probably a copy of a lost painting by Wilson that was in the Brinsley Ford collection, and which was etched by Thomas Hastings. Note on reverse 'From L.R. Nightingale, Paston House, Elm Hill, Norwich. Artist Name - attributed to J. Crome'. Typed note on reverse 'I bought this painting from Nightingale of Norwich in 1947. Painting in unknown hand based on composition by Richard Wilson. Brinsley Ford thinks it excellent copy of lost work of Wilson.' A similar, yellowy version is in the Bristol Museum and Art Gallery (BAG 714722).
