Caption
The style of this painting, its presentation, and the exotic armour, all indicate that it must have been painted abroad, most probably in the Netherlands. The identification of the sitter is more problematic. He has traditionally been identified as Sir Charles Yate, 3rd Bt., but he is more likely to be his son, Sir John. However, unless Sir John can be shown to have been in the Netherlands, in some military capacity, it must be very doubtful that he, rather than some Dutchman, is represented here. It is also perplexing that a member of a Recusant family should be active in the strongly Protestant United Provinces. However, there is a miniature at Coughton derived from this painting, which strongly suggests that the sitter must be someone from one of the families connected with the house.
