Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Lionel Sackville, 1st Duke of Dorset (1688-1765) and his sister Lady Mary Sackville, later Duchess of Beaufort (1687-1705) as Children by Sir Godfrey Kneller (Lübeck 1646/9 - London 1723), early 1690s, signed G. Kneller f. Full-length portraits as children, with a dog and deer in a park. He is gazing to the left and standing centre, wearing a pale mauve skirted coat stroking the head of a deer with his left hand. He also holds a garland of flowers stretching between both hands. She sits on the left, in a blue dress over a white chemise with a dog on her lap and a gold cloak over her right knee. Parkland setting trees and building on the left, with distant horizon with trees and cloudy sky on the right.

Provenance

Listed as "[...] and his children", a whole-length paired with that of the "Earl of Dorsett", amongst the nine whole-lengths in "the great Dining Roome above stairs" [the Ballroom] at Knole, in the 1706 inventory; listed in the Great Hall in the 1799 inventory; listed in the Great Hall in the 1828 inventory (no.6); thence by descent. On loan from the Trustees of the Sackville Estate.
