Summary
Oil painting on canvas, A Landscape with the Flight into Egypt attributed to Charles-Antoine Herault (Paris 1644 - Paris 1718) and Noël Coypel (Paris 1628 - Paris 1707) . A classical wooded landscape, with the small group of the Holy Family seen on a track in the foreground.
Provenance
Alexis Delahante (1767 - 1837) closing down sale prior to his return to Paris, H. Phillips, 3-4 June [2nd day] 1814, lot 64, as by F. Mola: “This picture appears as fresh as if it was just taken from the painter’s easel. It partakes of the elevated style of Gaspar Poussin, in the composition of the trees, buildings, &c. There is an unusual richness and playfulness of pencil in the clump of earth in the fore ground, and the bright blue and silvery sky is well harmonized by similar tints in the figures, which partake of the style of Albano and Caracci.”; bought by Wilbraham Egerton, for 115 gns. It was at this same sale that he paid 700 gns. for Van Dyck’s Stoning of St. Stephen; bequeathed by Maurice Egerton, 4th Baron Egerton of Tatton (1874 - 1958) to the National Trust with the house, gardens and contents of Tatton Park
