Summary
Oil painting on oak panel, Stephen Gardiner (1483-1555), Bishop of Winchester, British (English) School, 1605/08. A painted oval half-length portrait of a mature man, turned slightly to the left, gazing at the spectator, wearing a white surplice and black stole, and black cap. His left hand holds a closed book in front of his midriff, his index finger inserted in its pages. One of a set of 44 portraits (NT 12971-129794).

Probably originally painted for Thomas Sackville, 1st Earl of Dorset (1536 - 1608); on loan from the Trustees of the Sackville Estate
