Summary
Oil painting on canvas (originally distemper), one of three arabesque canvases from the ceiling of the Palazzo Contarini in Venice (NT1257144). In the manner of Giovanni da Udine (Udine 1487 – Rome 1564), the canvases were part of the original ceiling bought by William Bankes in 1849 which had to be reduced to fit into the Spanish room. The three panels are left-overs from this reduction and are now set into the wall under the three windows.
