Summary
Oil painting on canvas, Landscape with Female Figure seated beneath a Tall Tree in a River Landscape, her Dog Asleep, Franco-Netherlandish School, circa 1770-1780. A narrow vertical panel, the lower quarter containing a landscape with a woman seated on a sandy bank holding a staff, a sleeping dog and a basket beside her. Behind her is a river, flowing under a bridge to the left; on the far bank is a church. In the right foreground is a grassy mound, from which a tree grows; the top part of the picture is filled with tree and sky. One of seven paintings set into panels in the wall.
Provenance
The bequest of Margaret (Anderson) McEwan, The Hon. Mrs Ronald - later Dame Margaret - Henry Fulke Greville, DBE (1863-1942) from probate records linked with the donation of the property to the National Trust in 1943. This item found on the record for Polesden Lacey pictures, drawings etc., the Small Drawing Room, page 128.
