Summary

Oil painting on canvas, Called Lady Jane Boyle (d.1780) by Jacob Huysmans (Antwerp c.1630 - London 1696), previously catalogued as school of Sir Peter Lely (Soest 1618 - London 1680). A three-quarter-length portrait of a young woman seated, turned slightly to the right, gazing at the spectator, she supports her left elbow on a stone slab and cups her left hand on her cheek, An inscription on the stone reads 'Beau Morte Anno Domino M...'. Above, a winged putto leans on the hour-glass, on top of the slab and looks down at it. She wears a silver-grey dress, with a circular decolletage and full, looped-up elbow-length sleeves. A long piece of bright blue drapery surrounds the lower half of her figure and falls across her knees. She points to the inscription. Crimson drapery, behind her, makes a contrast with her pale dress. A small portion of an evening sky, with pink sunlit clouds and dark trees, can be seen at top right of the picture. The sitter has traditionally been identified as Lady Jane Boyle, Daughter of 2nd Earl of Burlington and sister of Lady Elizabeth Bedingfeld (d. 1751). As she died in 1780, aged 82, this seventeenth-century portrait clearly depicts a different sitter. Inscribed 'Lady Jane Boyle' top left. White catalogue number '84' l.r.
